Concept of phase-noise tuning of bipolar voltage-controlled oscillators

چکیده
So far, oscillators have been designed to perform a specific task while the key parameters such as phase-noise and power consumption are set by the hardware design and not by the communication system in an adaptive way. As the communication channel is often subject to changes, the conditions under which the oscillator operates should be changed as well. Therefore, the concept of design for adaptivity must be considered as a cornerstone in the design of today’s telecommunication systems. Accordingly, the concept of phasenoise tuning, introduced in this paper, shows how oscillators can trade performance for power consumption in an adaptive way. The presented model of a quasi-tapped bipolar VCO reveals the resulting trade-offs between phase-noise and power consumption imposed by the design for adaptivity.

Silicon-Based Distributed Voltage-Controlled Oscillators
Distributed voltage-controlled oscillators (DVCOs) are presented as a new approach to the design of silicon VCOs at microwave frequencies. In this paper, the operation of distributed oscillators is analyzed and the general oscillation condition is derived, resulting in analytical expressions for the frequency and amplitude. Two tuning techniques for DVCOs are demonstrated, namely, the inherent-...

Due to technology limitations as well as stringent operating conditions that are imposed, the design of fully integrated analog RF front-end circuits is aimed at the edge of the required performances. Such an approach implies that each dB of power or noise is of high importance, as it directly determines the range of operation of a system. Accordingly, a design trajectory that offers certain po...
متن کاملConcept of Quasi-Capacitive Tapping of Bipolar Voltage-Controlled Oscillators
Generally, bipolar transistors have better performance than MOS transistors if higher transconductances for the same operating point or higher transition frequencies are required. On the other hand, compared to MOS transistors, bipolar transistors often have limited use in the design of VCO’s, due to a limited voltage swing across the resonator and therefore limited phase-noise performance. How...

This paper demonstrates the feasibility of implementing wide tuning band low phase noise oscillators in low cost Sibased integration technologies. For that, it is necessary to use radio-frequency switched capacitors arrays (RFSCA) and differentially tuned anti-parallel varactors. To corroborate this idea, a voltage controlled oscillator (VCO), designed in a low cost 0.35 μm CMOS technology, is ...

Different methods to build integrated resonators and frequency tuning elements are reviewed. Two new figures of merit are defined and used to compare voltage-controlled oscillators (VCO) reported by various authors. It is shown that bipolar and CMOS VCOs can achieve similar performances. Introduction A large number of integrated resonator-based oscillators have been reported during the last few...
